K-tel was great in getting licenses from many record companies, so they could do real compilations, other record companies could only use the own artists and some cover versions by unknown singers or instrumentals. The bad thing was, the increased playing time of about 30 minutes per side instead 22 minutes resulted in a lack of frequencies below 80 Hz. No problem, when using a small stereo system, but noticeable on better speakers. Could done in the 1970's, when it became usual, that bass guitar doesn't imitate a bass fiddle, but has a sound with boosted low mids.

I remember the good old days when a K-Tel record had ten to eleven cuts on each side, and the biggest worry was whether the needle on the stylus was sharp enough to play all the songs without the needle skipping across the grooves. And if your favorite hit was edited down to two minutes to fit into the record, well, that was a small price to pay for 22 hits on one compilation album. Nowadays these K-Tel albums are hard to find.

That has to be a first having stars appear in a KTEL commercial…. And it just happens to be two of my favorites MILlLIE JACKSON and the great JOE SIMON!

I found this LP in a dollar bin recently. The version I have does NOT include Boz Scaggs, the Jacksons, Chillawack, or Kansas. Plus, the KISS song here is "hard luck woman", not "Beth".

Interesting idea. I'm guessing half the world already knows this, but in case not... Before Elton because famous he was hired around 1969-1970, to record a collection of covers for a company much like K-Tel, and it was called Pickwick Records. The LP was called "Top Of The Pops". I got this album for $1 at my local pawn shop 10 years ago, the disc is like near mint, virtually brand new. That being said, its pristine condition also highlights its cheapness, shallow skip prone grooves and mediocre sound quality, but It sure does bring back fond childhood memories of seeing the commercial on TV and hearing this album played at my school and at home.
